1. The Staff of this Department as authorized for the year ending 31st December, 1933 consisted of: -Superintendent of Crown Lands and Surveys, Assistant Superintendent of Crown Lands, Assistant Superintendent of Surveys, Land Surveyors, 4 First Class Assistant Land Surveyors (Chinese), 1 Second Class Assistant Land Surveyor (Chinese), 22 Third Class Assistant Land Surveyors (Chinese), 3 Computers (Chinese), 82 Survey Coolies, 1 Chief Draughtsman, 15 Draughts- men (Chinese), 1 Senior Clerical and Accounting Staff Clerk, 7 Junior Clerical Service Clerks (Chinese), 7 Office Attendants and Messengers, 2 Senior Land Bailiffs and 4 Bailiffs.

EXPENDITURE.

2. As the Crown Lands & Surveys Department forms part of the Public Works Department and is accommodated in the same building, the charges for such items as light, heating, etc., cannot be stated. Omitting these itens, the statement of costs is as follows:-

CROWN LANDS.

4. Land Sales, Extensions, Grants, etc.-The total amount of premia paid into the Treasury during the year was $2,257,996.67 of which $21,302.00 was derived from fees for survey and boundary stones. The estimates for the year were $1,300,000.00 for Premia on new leases and $30,000.00 for Boundary Stones and Survey Fees. Table A gives a comparative statement and Table B gives a graph of the revenue derived from Land sales, etc., for the years 1924-1933.

5. Sales without auction. These are included in Table A at the end of this Report. The principal one involved the sale of an area of 25,050 square feet to the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank from which $1,250,000.00 as premium was derived.

6. Exchanges.-These are also included in Table A.

7. Grants on nominal terms.-Grants of areas were made to the Honourable the Secretary for Chinese Affairs, the Tung Wah Hospital, St. John Ambulance Brigade and the Wesleyan .Methodist Missionary Trust Association.

8. Grants on short leases.-Two areas, totalling 47,500 square feet, were granted as New Kowloon Dairy Farm Lots, each for a term of ten years.

9. Extensions of short lenses.-Kowloon Garden Lot No. 3 was extended for a further period of five years from 1st May, 1933.

10. Piers. (a) Permanent.-In Hong Kong, on preparation of lease plans for pier No. 5 premium $1,780.00 was charged for the excess area of 356 square feet over original area granted, and a temporary pier was converted to permanent pier No. 45. In Kowloon extensions were granted to Piers Nos. 9 and 35.

(b) Temporary.-Licenses to erect ten piers in the New Territories were issued during the year with fees amounting to $342.73 and premia to $14.16.

11. Re-entries.-Eighteen lots in Hong Kong (four of which were cancelled), thirteen lots in Kowloon (three of which were cancelled), twenty lots in New Kowloon (nine of which were can- celled), twenty seven lots in Southern District (New Territories) and one hundred and thirty six lots in the Northern District (New Territories) were re-entered during the year.

12. Permits to occupy land for short periods.-These were of a very miscellaneous character and too numerous to admit of individual mention. (a) The total amount of fee collected during the year was $275,162.03, being $105,946.29 for Hong Kong. $111,100.87 for Kowloon and $58,114.87 for New Kowloon. New permits issued during the year totalled 616 and 304 were cancelled
